Full hordes of lemmingseo2 have started to invade the web, talking about french tabloïds and american TV shows, harvesting backlinks as they go. If this doesn't make sense, no panic ; it is all part of an official and very serious project, in wich students in webmastering are competing to be the first lemmingseo2...
Just to make things clearer, lemmingseo2 is neither a popular 90's videogame, nor a small arctic rodent. This portemanteau word (made by contracting search engine optimization and lemming) is the object of a competition. Students from the webmaster section of lycee Saliege (in Toulouse) have a four months to put their own website on top of results for the request "lemmingseo2". The competition plays out on Google, since the american search engine weights for about 90% of the web searches in France.
The contest just a couple of months, a very short time to make a difference. Granted, they are taught and supervised by their teacher Sandrine Bertrand, and each of them gets help from his tutor, a professional propped up on the techniques of referencing.
As part of the competition, each student has to buil and manage a personal site (with the adress "name-lemmingseo2"), and optimise it to climb higher on the Google results for every search "lemmingseo2". The theme of the site, the appearance or the construction are left to the competitors inspiration (and they indeed showed a lot of imagination. But students will also have to apply all the rules of search engine optimization to get ahead in the lemmingseo2 race.
Up to this point, the future webmasters were allowed only a single link each. In this educational project, it was necessary to focus at first on the website's optimization. But the rule came to an end on December 12th. It is now authorized (and of course strongly advised) to multiply the links lemmingseo2.
